i have used the insurance on several fälle. just take your booklet with you and tell them that you want them to handle the bill directly and that you can't take a rechnung yourself. it worked for me so far

Re: Hey

You need to call the insurance company asap. My experience was that asking the doctor to bill the insurance never worked... I ended up with a huge debt which the insurance company never told me about, which I needed to pay upon my next visit to Germany three months after the end of my exchange, or face legal consequences. The way it worked, which was never explained to me, was as follows: You pay the bill, get a receipt/copy of bill, and submit it to your insurance. Then you are reimbursed via bank transfer. If you do not have a bank account, give them your host family's bank account routing number, and the insurance will deposit the money and your host family can give it to you.
But first, before you make an appointment unless it is a life-threatening emergency, you need to call the insurance company.
